May 2, 2004 - Month 3 photos
May 2, 2004 - Month 3 has passed and we are a week into his fourth month. Time does fly. I go to a group that meets at the hospital called "Baby and Me." There are usually around 15 to 20 babies and moms (and an occasional dad) ranging in age from 3 weeks to 4 months. I went the first time at 3 weeks and I remember looking around in awe at how big the babies were and how much they "did." Now when I go, most of the babies look SO young to me. Carter is old there! It was a big realization that time is passing. And boy do those moms look tired when they come in the first time.
Well, the big news of the day is that Carter laughed for the first time today and rolled over for the first time yesterday! Two huge developmental milestones that actually get recorded in his little baby book. I've been looking at that page where you are supposed to mark down his firsts for over a month now and have had nothing to record. I certainly have NOT been able to record "Slept through the night" yet. At night about 3 hours is normal (any less and we are grumpy now), over 4 hours doesn't get us giddy, but it is not yet typical, but we haven't gone over 5 hours yet. It is on an upward trend most nights, although last night he threw us for a loop. It is our fault, we got him off schedule. If we do our part, good naps during the day, working on getting him to bed starting at about 8 or 8:30 - we usually get him to sleep by 9. And then it’s just a few nighttime feedings until he wakes up for good by 8 am or so.
David and I are still splitting the duties of baby care. The nights and mornings stay the same, David has full responsibility for Carter while I cook dinner from 6 to 9, I get him from 9 to 3am, then David has him from 3am to 9am. I take over again from 9 am to noon. The noon to 6 changes - I get Tuesday, Thursdays and Sundays and David gets Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday. Friday we both take him and we try to explore some new part of our new hometown. So far we have gone on a few hikes in local parks, visited a Rhododendron garden, and taken in the zoo. Yes, we know how easy we have it with 2 full time people to take care of one little boy. Yes, I know how wonderful the situation is. Yes, we try to appreciate how lucky we are.
Our other big event this month was our first big road trip with Carter. We drove the Honda down to California to be with our friend Jeff at a celebration of life for his parents. While we attended that, Carter got babysat for SIX hours by Tita Cookie - he did fine and Cookie survived. Mega-thanks for the help Cookie. While we were there we stayed with the ever-so-gracious and hospitable, Tammy and Shaham. It was great to spend time with them and they even let us use their house to host some more friends for an after-work get together. We got to see Anand and his new Jaguar, get tips from Greg about the upcoming stages we are facing, catch up more with Dusty and Tita Cookie, find out about the house Dan is buying, hear about the upcoming nuptials of Doug and Missy, and, in general, just reconnect with these good friends.
Tomorrow we leave for our first road trip in the RV since September 2003. We are going up to Seattle to see some team called the Minnesota Twins play the Seattle Mariners. David is going to three games, Carter and I will join him for one. I'll also get to see an old Anchorage friend, as she lives up there.
Oh, we are also trying cotton diapers this month. Our own little effort to save the world. On that note, I'll end this month.
Until next time. Betsy
