Frequently Asked Questions

How did you get your mail while you traveled?

We used a mail forwarding service by Escapees. All of our mail went to Texas and then twice a month (or so) we asked them to send it to somewhere we knew we would be.  We sent it to home addresses (David’s mom) and also General Delivery to small town post offices  The service was great with the one glitch of sending mail to Canada takes much more time than we thought and we had to hang out in Banff for longer than we intended (oh, the horror).

Why did you do this?

Uhhhh - because it made sense? We realized that if we were going to do this, we should try to do it when we are young and can hike the trails we want to hike. So what if we put off retirement another year? Financially, it was feasible and didn’t put us into any kind of debt.  Emotionally, it was sound.

Where did you stay all the time?

We found campgrounds via our two big directories “Frommer's Unofficial Guide to the Best RV & Tent Campgrounds in the U.S.A.” and “2002 Trailer Life Directory: Campgrounds, RV Parks, and Services.” We usually ended up in private campgrounds, but sought out state and national parks whenever available. In the midwest, we were on a lot to driveways.  If our goal was just to sleep and move on the next day, we overnighted at the local Walmart parking lot.

How is Pluto doing?

Pluto (our 60 pound yellow lab / greyhound mutt) is doing great! He has been the biggest surprise of the whole trip.  He has mellowed incredibly and seems to love that everytime we stop there are new places to sniff and pee. He gets to be with the “pack” much more than when we were working.

How many miles per gallon do you get?

Well, remember this is our home. We don’t have a heating or air-conditioning or garbage bill.  Given all that - we usually get 7 miles to the gallon
