2/9/04 - Week 2 Photos - Settling into more of a routine now. Betsy’s mom was with us the first 10 days (incredibly helpful!), but now we’re having to survive on our own (at least until David’s sister, Michelle, arrives on Saturday).
Overall, we’re doing fine. Carter is definitely tracking objects with his eyes (for a week now). He also seems to relax when we touch him to calm his crying, which has started happening just in the past few days. He is captivated by bright objects with high contrast. A “Cat in the Hat” doll (gift of our friends, Lara and Chris) is one that he is especially fascinated with (we have it over his changing table). He is not interested in grabbing and holding objects, yet, however. Also, he doesn’t have much interest in a pacifier, which we hoped would calm him occasionally when he’s crying, but we seem to be able to calm the crying on our own OK for now (knocking on all wood I can find).
We’re also experimenting with around-the-house baby carriers right now. We’ve had good success with a “front pack” by Kelty, but only limited success with a cloth “sling”. We’ll keep trying both. Some people swear by the sling. It is a lot easier to put on and more versatile than the Kelty. Everything is an experiment for us for now.
Thanks for all the wonderful e-mails, letters, and gifts -- we’re getting to know our postal carrier (Sarah) quite well. Pluto still doesn’t seem to like her much, however, despite the occasional dog treat from her. In Pluto’s mind, he successfully chases her away every day -- 100% success defending his turf! Good dog!
